Just like every other Mario Party

Reviewed by chibidono on May 31, 2007  |  report this review

Graphics: 4/10

While its not horrible, I've definitely seen better Wii games and even GCN games that have better graphics than this game. Just like all other Mario Parties, the boards are really colorful and detailed though. I recommended getting those component cables... Another thing that bothers me is the fact that Mario Party 8 doesn't support widescreen. In fact, I wish Nintendo just screen alone rather than add this annoying "bars" for a fake widescreen. Other reviews may say its not a big deal, but once you start playing, it gets annoying fast. Set your Wii to the 4:3 ratio.

Game Play: 8/10

Most if not all the minigames are fun to play. The Mario Party Series has the minigame formula down no question. I do want to say though, there aren't many motion functionality games though. Rayman and Warioware have more types of these motion games than Mario Party 8. A lot of games have you holding your remote like Super Paper Mario and have you controlling from there. The minigames are still fun nonetheless.

On the boards themselves, strategy and luck are strongly needed to best everyone else. There are boards where you cash in money to hotels to get stars and you have the standard 20 coins for a star boards. The bonuses are similar to Mario Party 7 and the game gives you plenty of opportunity to gain coins. Candies have now taken the place of items and orbs and they do a pretty good job of evening out the game as well. Lack of online is a bummer but there isn't really much room to complain. Gotta go call up your friends for this party.

Sound and Music 5/10

No voice-acting. The standard Nintendo jibberish with the "doo doo doo" "bloop bloop". The music is at least happy and catchy sometimes.

Overall: 6/10

Overall its your standard Mario Party game. You gotta love the minigames and boards that they can still come up with, though you'll play through a couple and be reminded of past games. Its a kinda fun one player game but once you get bored with that, you definitely need some friends over. Prepare to lose at the last minute though when the computer or your friends have a sudden turn of luck at the last second. Bonus-wise, there are places which include your Miis but aren't as fun as Wii Sports or some games of Wii Play. I should applaud Nintendo for the easy to use interface for the minigames though. In the mean time, definitely pick this up if you got friends that can play this with you.

Mostly the same old game. The one player mode in this game (star battle mode) is lacking minigames and depends too much on chance. The only strategy in this mode is when you use your candy (similar to items in other mario parties) and what candy you buy. The party mode is pretty much the same. You have six boards one of which that you have to unlock. A total of 14 characters gives you a lot to choose from: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Waluigi, Wario, Boo, Dry Bones, Hammer Bro, Blooper, Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, and Birdo. Has a variety of minigames that are overall fun to play, but some seem like old minigames from other mario parties in disguise. There is also a "fun Baazar" mode where you can buy things with "carnival cards" you earn from playing. Of course theres a minigame mode where you can play all the minigames who have unlocked in a few different ways. Theres also an extras mode where you can play extra minigames with your miis. Definitely worth buying. Its just one of those games that you wont play often after the first week, but you will never completely stop playing...untill the next one comes out!

Running around in circles can only entertain you till you fall down. This game is basically the same as the others. Most of the games were fun, and the boards were great, but what do you do? You wait for luck. Here's a 4 out of 5.

This game can be loads of fun with a lot of people but if your alone it can drag especially if your not a die-hard mario fan. I gave it four stars because I think it was worth buying and considering how great the price of a video game is these days I think that says a lot.
HOPE THIS HELPED!!

Worst-Mario_Party

The minigame masters at Hudson have long since proven they know how to produce gameplay that's bite-size and easy to digest. Mario Party, the video game franchise that eats like a board game, has now arrived on the Nintendo Wii for the first time with Mario Party 8, and it brims with plenty of pick-up-and-play action. The move to the Wii could've been a great time to revamp the series, and while many of the minigames make sound use of the Wii's unique controls, it's ultimately just more of the same Mario Party.

This year, Mario Party goes to the Star Carnival, which is run by the symbiotic duo of MC Ballyhoo and his talking top hat, Big Top. The carnival theme doesn't really penetrate past the menus, though, and once you're in a game, it's pretty much the same old Mario Party that Hudson's been churning out for the past eight years now. The primary mode still plays like a board game, with four players smacking the dice block to move across spaces, collecting as many coins and stars as they can before they finish a set number of turns, and of course, playing minigames at the end of each round.

Mario Party 8 doesn't have as many minigames as Mario Party 7, nor does it support eight players or include a goofy microphone peripheral. It does, however, make generally solid use of the Wii Remote, and the number of palette-swap minigames seems lower. A good number of minigames will have you holding the remote sideways in standard gamepad fashion, but you'll also swing at baseballs, furiously shake a can of soda, do some tightrope walking, use a paddle to help row a boat, and more, all by gesticulating with the remote. There are also some good references to past Nintendo games couched in these minigames, such as a first-person ghost-hunting minigame that appears to take place in Luigi's mansion.

While many of the minigames are four-player free-for-alls, there are plenty of one-on-one, two-on-two, or one-on-three games to mix things up, but what really helps keep the minigames fresh is the varied focus of the minigames. The minigames never get terribly complicated, though there's always a practice option if you're having trouble grasping one of the high-concept games. This simplicity makes it easy to jump into Mario Party 8 with casual players, but it also cripples the lasting value of the game. There are a number of minigames that, after the first time, you'll probably never want to play again.

Bogus minigames aside, the biggest problem with Mario Party 8 is how chance-driven the game can be, which, unfortunately, is also one of the franchise's defining characteristics. Roll an unfortunate number and land on a bad space, and you could find yourself going from first to last, losing most of your coins, or even one of your stars. There are six uniquely themed boards to play on here, and most of them come packing a different gameplay gimmick as well. The Donkey Kong- and Super Mario Sunshine-themed boards are traditional Mario Party game boards, w

The game is not all it is cracked up to be. the game did not have good graphics and thae gameplay was that of an monopoly board which gets really boring. I did have fun playing the mini games but it took too long to get to them. The game is repetitive and that is why i'm giving it a generous 2 out of 5.

If your a real Mario Party Fan you will like this. Its
a basic old mario party game everythings mostly the
same except different mini games. I love the controls
though swinging, hitting, shaking.. etc. alot of fun.
Playing with more then one person is more exciting
then playing with the computers. Very fast not sure
if I like that, that much. I like the old mario party. This
one seems a little to fast when you roll the die. Game
kind of goes bye faster then orignial did. good game
though.

I bought expecting a party game better then Wario wares, however this is not the case. The game has a better single player mode then Wario but that is about it. Max of 4 players is all it supports and the mini games are boring and dull 90% of the time.

Wii-mote gives it an edge

This mario party is not much different from the other mario party's. Like I said the wii mote gives it a certain edge, but aside from that there isn't much difference. Plenty of mini games to play. Like many other mario party games YOU NEED FRIENDS to play it with. Playing by yourself can get pretty boring! If your the kind of person who loves wacky mini game and have brothers, sisters, or friends then you'll have fun dishing out a party with mario and friends.

My wife and I just did not get this game. It was more frustrating than it was fun. I received it as part of buying a used Wii and would not have bought it by choice, so please don't take my review to seriously. I bet if you liked the previous versions of Mario Party, you will like this one.

It's rediculous how much this game has not changed one bit. I thought of how much more this game could be with the new control schematics but Nintendo kept this game the exact same as every other Mario Party game. The unlockables are lame at best and the only redeming quality of this game are that those bone characters from Super Mario 3 are in it.

Whose idea was it to make a multiplayer game move so slowly? This game is strictly for those who can't think at a speed of faster than 2 mph.

All in all, this game looks okay, plays slow, and is an okay game at best. Meant for small children only.

P.S. If any teenager+ guys out there get beat by a girl in the "shake a pop can" mini-game, you need to practice more.
