The Elder Scrolls series The Elder Scrolls series has been delivering HARD wide open RPG's for over a decade. Why were they so innovative and wide open? The first game, Arena, was spawned from a team of guys that needed a vehicle for their D&D fights. In 2002 Morrowind seemed to be the realization of a wide open world where the player could change their appearance and explore a detailed world with an unprecedented amount of content. While anyone could play Morrowind, it was difficult to complete the game without carefully reading the dialog and analyzing the map. Almost all of the dialog was in text, and important clues and instructions were entered into the player's journal. No cursor was needed. Also, It was one of the first to realize real-time combat (instead of turn-based) in a role playing game. However, the graphics were poor, even for 2002, and the combat often felt unresponsive. The award winning music in Morrowind added .. no, it possibly created the epic feel. I can still hear the melodic strings mixed with the narrators voice in the opening.

That brings me to Oblivion.
Gameplay the Good: Oblivion has the most responsive combat of ANY RPG to date. When a player swings and hits a shield he feels recoil. The player can parry other attacks, and in true Elder Scrolls style, each action adds experience. A new thing added this time around is that the player not only gets better, but gains additional abilities as they level up specific abilities. For instance, and archer will be able to zoom in farther at a higher level. The game adds so many new skills and mini-games that add depth to the variety of skills the player must develop. The kinetics and environmental effects add to a unique experience for every player. I love the way magic is used and the "thief" aspect of the game can be thrilling. Gameplay the Bad:
* The CURSOR on the map along with the new "fast travel" feature turn what could have been a challenging game to “childsplay”. Whenever a player gets a task or a mission, a cursor pops up on the compass and all the player has to do is follow the cursor. The map only needs to be consulted if the player wants to "Fast Travel" to the desired location. Fast-travel is makes the large map tiny. Instead of having to plan out and organize how the player will spend their time... the player just clicks a button and is warped to the next area. Don't worry about carrying the right things with you on your expedition. Bethesda even added horses to make the player faster. This would have been an excellent way to travel, but it becomes meaningless because the player cannot fight from the horse and the frame-rate slightly stutters when the player moves too fast. (This also happens when the player is faster at higher levels) All of the Morrowind fans I've talked to are extremely disappointed at how easy the quests are .. and how they felt that the game was "leading them by the hand".
* Where are the legendary scary enemies? (sorry about double po

You start out with creating your character in the best character creation system I have every seen. You choose from 10 races, all with their own special abilities and powers. But you know what? It doesnt matter! In Oblivion, your character can do anything. A Khajiit (a cat like race) is the best starter for stealth players. But you could choose an orc and still train it to have stealth; it will just take a little longer. Thats the beauty of Oblivion, it lets your character be anything, or, if you have a few thousand hours, everything. You can train any race in every area, until you have a mage, thief, assassin, and warrior character. It will take time, but it is possible. But thats only a fraction of the game play. Once you beat the (its actually fun!) intro/tutorial, you get released into Cyrodil to play the game. You can do everything. Join a selection of guilds, save money to buy a house (one in each major city, very expensive, but full of advantages), steal weapons, tackle over 200 dungeons, go to jail, escape from jail, do the main quest, find miscellaneous quests, WHATEVER! To put this idea in greater depth, I am going to provide a long (not short) scenario about what you can do. Suppose you are walking along an Imperial City street during the day. You come across a shop called Edgars Discount Spells. Knowing full well that your magical abilities are very amateur, you go in intending to purchase a new spell. However, the spells arent exactly cheap, as the name of the shop would suggest. So, you go meet your friend in the Thieves Guild and buy some lock picks, and then go to an inn and sleep until nightfall, perhaps stealing some food while youre there. When you wake up, its midnight. You head down to Edgars, avoiding the guards just in case. When you get there, you pick the lock and go in. Edgar is nowhere in sight. He must be asleep upstairs. You see a scroll lying on the table, one that is encrypted with a spell. There are only a few of these out in the open, and none of them are ones you exactly want. But, knowing that thievery is not always the most advantaged path, you choose a spell that will increase your agility and leave. When you get to the street corner, a guard is standing with his back to you. You decide to pick pocket him. You find 35 gold coins in his pocket, but he catches you and sends you to jail, confiscating your stolen items. You have one lockpick left, and a spell that can be used once a day to unlock doors. You use this spell on your cell door, and go upstairs to find the evidence chest, where all your belongings, including the stolen scroll, are being kept. You lockpick the chest, receiving all your own items, as well as all your inmates, and escape. This is only a very small chunk of what is possible in Oblivion. Add that to the unequaled AI (every NPC has a schedule that they complete everyday, but always in a different way) and the awesome Havok Physics Engine (every item has its own weight, shoot an arrow into a

I just want to say that this game is by far the best RPG in the history of man. First of all, Most people didnt like morrowind ( the third elderscroll ) becouse of the graphics which is understandible, but the fact is we didnt play mario when we were kids for the graphics did we? Well Oblivion has come a long way from Morrowind as far as graphics go, but let me say that morrowinds game play was just as good. The weapons on morrowing by far surpass the weapons on oblivion. If anyone has been following the elder scroll series they should know what im saying. Morrowind has weapons as far from darts to throwing stars to swords that no man could weild, but im not writing a review on morrowind. Oblivion is a must buy for the 360 along with gears of war and deadrising. Oblivion virtualy never ends, just when youve gotten done with the main quest ( about 20 hours ) the mages guild ( maybe 12 hours ) and the fighters guild and the dark brotherhood and the theives guild and so on and so forth theres still about 100 side quests to, not to mention the 2 expansions, knights of the nine, and shivering isles. This game is a master piece, Bethesda studios really out did themselves with this game. If youv purchased the collectors edition like myself then youv probobly watched the bonus material which shows that they were making this game before the PS2 was even out, which not many people realize how amazing that is! But if you ever have an xtra $60 in your pocket or if your looking for the ultimate RPG experiance The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the way to go.

When i first played Oblivion i knew this would been one of my favorite games. You can do so much and play for hours and hours and still barley scratch the surface and you can do almost ANYTHING you want like kill people, steal things or anything else you can almost imagine.....but like in real life you WILL have to face the consequences unless you get caught.....i played this game a VERY long time and still didnt get bored a second. Thats why the named it Game of the Year. This game is just too good to pass up theres just one thing i could POSSIBLE ask for, and thats if you could battle people online in a arena or something that would be VERY cool.

Pros: Pretty much everything good graphics, VERY FUN, in depth game, soo much to do and sooooo much more.

Cons: Nothing except maybe no online battle? lol

SO trust me if you have a 360 get this game, if you dont its good enough to buy a 360 and get this game.

Gameplay- The gameplay is so easy to use and learn. The controls were placed and the controller and it is so easy to get used to and get right into the action. This gameplay beats any other game out there. Gameplay gets a 5/5.

Storyline- The storyline is the best story you will ever have on any game. There are so many missions and billions of side missions. ( Well not exactly a billion but you know what i mean. ) Storyline gets a 5/5.

Although many think the graphics in this game are absolutely amazing, these days, they really aren't that great. Don't get me wrong though, they're pretty good. The graphics aren't really this game's main strength though. It is the freedom to do any quest in any order you want. The ability to steal ANY item in the game. The excitment of exploring the 16 square miles of land in the game, along with caves, forts, and dungeons. You can buy spells and cast them. You can be challanged by having to level up until you are deemed worthy by other characters in the game for certain quests. You are given over thirty different skill levels to work on throughout the game for your custom made character. Their are well over 100 quests in this game, and although it is a long game, it may seem short to you because you will play it so much. Fear not though, the shivering isles expansion pack is available on the xbox live marketplace for around $30, and gives you an approximated extra 30 hours of gameplay in the extention of the cyrodil world named, "the shivering isles". The battles in this game are in real time, and quite exhilirating. This game is a exlent adventure for anyone, and worth every penny.

The greatest thing about this game and why I say its "Outside the box" is because most games you have to do certain things in order or you really cant play the game you know you have to follow the story line. This game you still do to a small part but you can choose what to do and the free roam is great. If you want to join one brotherhood first and become a thief then go do it, maybee you would like to join the maige leadership first well your choice that is what i love about this game. The best game I have ever played

Reviewed by a92201 on August 02, 2007  |  report this review

Ever since I heard about Oblivion last year (I know, long time after it came out. I knew it was for CPU but not 360), I have been extremely anxious to get my hands on it. The four-month delay really hurt, but on March 21st, I was finally sitting through my final hours at school ready to go get it. When I went to pick it up, the employee at the store told me he had had some time to play it, and that it was amazing. Arriving home, I shoved a couple slices of pizza in my mouth and ran upstairs to finally play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This is my review of what I saw:

For those of you who are not familiar with The Elder Scrolls franchise, I will start out with a short description. Bethesda, the developer, has created a game where you can live another life, in another world. In Elder Scrolls, you create a character, and then do whatever you want in the massive, Tolkien inspired world of Tamriel. Every ES game takes place in a different province of Tamriel, Oblivion in the main hub of Cyrodil. Be anybody you want to be, from the selfish thief to the noble warrior. Its an RPG, by any standard, but its also considered to be more of an open-ended action adventure, with a lot of RPG elements. More about Oblivion in the game play section.

Graphics:
Note: I play this game on a standard TV, not a hi def so this section may not apply to you. The graphics are, simply put, amazing. While I do think the 360 is capable of more, this is incredible considering how huge the game is. What Bethesda has done is made basic surfaces 2D instead of perfectly detailed 3D. This means that what really should be protruding (like when there are different layers of brick) is protruding, but basic things like bolts on doors are 2D. I know this sounds sort of last gen, but somehow Bethesda has made it look awesome. You wont even notice it unless you walk up and put your nose on it. For example, on a log house, the vertical and horizontal logs are separate and 3 dimensional, but the separate planes are actually just on a 2D plain, but detailed very well. Looking at anything from over 10 feet away makes it look extraordinary. Snow and rain looks great, and also adds to the mood of the game. Clouds in the sky are varied and realistic, and the water looks as good as real life. Character models are also very good, although obviously not as awesome as the environment. Humans look the best, and orcs look quite plain, although there are few of these in the game. Horse models are acceptable, although not the best that they could be. The third person view is a huge step up from Morrowind, although the jumping animation is terrible. Weapons are incredible. You may find yourself just stopping to look at how superbly detailed they are, and how cool they look. I give graphics a 9/10.

Sound:
I really do not consider sound to be a huge factor, but having good music and sound is a nice touch. And Oblivion has that. The opening theme sounds great. Its nothing I would have associated

Amazing Game

Reviewed by Zeke1901 on August 05, 2007  |  report this review

EVERYTHING about this game is great except for the main storyline, which I thought and a few of a my friends agreed actually sucked. But there is sooo much to do and so much to explore with 16 square miles of land. The weapons are great no matter what you choose to be, I chose a mage and some of the lightning spells were phenomenal. Bows and arrows were lots of fun too, but what's really fun is going around causing havok, getting arrested...and then breaking out of jail. I had this for PC though so I can't tell you the Xbox 360 specs, but on the PC you have an enormous amount of mods and even other worlds to explore created by others.

I'm not an role play gamer for the most part but this game can make someone hooked!! My friend and I went and rented this title this last week and I think I'm going to start up a game after watching her!! Its so impressive! It's like watching a movie! On the fly loading for most outdoor scenes... an endless list of things to collect, blend, etc. This is alot like Final Fantasy with ALOT more extras! I think that EVERYone should try this game at least once and see what you think. You never know... you might like it! :)

Elder Scrolls four (oblivion) is by far the best rpg i have ever played. It is absolutely and completely endless! In my opinion you could own this game forever and never see everything there is to see! The graphics are amazing! Especially when they are compared to the questionable graphics of elder scrolls four. This game allows you to do just about anything you could ever want to do in real life! Pick locks, steal just about anything, fight with a huge array of weapons that you find or weapons you create yourself! Or just fight with the hand to hand combat system if thats more your style. Once you get into it and beginn leveling up and seeing all oblivion has to offer you will instantly be hooked.

If you are an RPG fan this is the game for you. I bought this version after the Xbox version for my new 360 and could play it for hours without stopping. I love the idea that I can go anywhere I want in the game and do just about anything I want. I can increase my skill at robbery and try and get away with it. The drawback I find with this version versus the previous version is the fast travel and the pointer to tell you where to go. Have the fun of the previous version was having to work for your quest and remembering where everything is. There is not as much exploration in the new version since you always know where you are going. Even with that drawback I highly recommend this game!

Even after all the time this game has been around it is still so amazing every second that you play it. The amount of depth included in this game is so crazy that it would take a full day to describe everything. If you do not have this game then get it right this second. The expansion pack, The Shivering Isles, adds EVEN MORE weapons and armor into the game. Plus a HUGE extra world filled with slightly off people that are all voiced perfectly. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys video games at all. This is an instant classic.

The Best Xbox 360 Game To Date.

Reviewed by mattg00013 on March 06, 2008  |  report this review

I have had this game from day one and to this day it still I am still amazed by it. The first time you walk out of your prison cell and into the world that is The Elder Scrolls Oblivion it is truly amazing, I dont think anything on the Xbox 360 has yet to surpass the feeling that I got when I walked out of that cave. It was truly amazing looking out on this massive world that just seemed so real. Now I am not one to play very very very long RPG games I generally find them very dull and boring and generally will quit pretty quickly. This game is nothing like that in my opinion from the begining to the mid point that I have made it to thus far I am still enjoying every moment of it, except for those damn vampires. As I stated before I generally dont play long games, I dont normally have the time for them yet I have managed to log in about 170 hours into this game which is just insane for me but its just that good. Add on Shivering Isles and a few of the other add ons and you get an even more amazing experience. This game is a must own for everyone in my opinion but some may not care for it.

Oblivion is an absolutely amazing game. This game will suck you in for hours and hours, and you won't even realize the sun rising in the morning. This is a RPG like no other. There are vast amounts of side quests to do. You can make your own weapons and create spells. There are so many fun things to do in Oblivion. I got this game a year and a half ago, and I'm still playing. The best thing about it, is that I haven't even started the main quest. The graphics are fantastic. The view of the nature around you is very serene, and you can't help but to stop and look at how realistic the grass is. Although there isn't much of a variety in the music, it's still fantastic. The music is probably the least amount in the game there is. If you love killing monsters, grabbing their loot, get stronger, and kill stronger monsters, then this game is a must have for you. But of course, there are other things in the game that will also suck you in. Oblivion is a vast world, and you should take the time to look around and enjoy it. Other people say this game is a must have, and I can't complain.
